BEVERLY - Health Quarters, a Beverly-based women's health organization that runs five clinics on the North Shore, celebrated its 35th anniversary last night with its first fundraiser, "Celebrating Remarkable Women," at the Ipswich Country Club.
The event raised money to fund sex education initiatives, said Health Quarters Executive Director Lianne Cook. The agency used to have eight sex-ed teachers, said Cook, but because of a lack of federal funding it now has only one.
Honored at the event were Judy Norsigian, one of the authors of "Our Bodies, Ourselves," Salem Mayor Kim Driscoll, and Christine Baze, a singer who has worked to raise awareness about cervical cancer.
"Family planning has impacted all of us as a tool in our life choices," Cook said. "As we honor these women tonight, they've made some remarkable life choices, as well."
Health Quarters started in 1971 and has served more than 1 million women. It provides family planning and pregnancy testing services to 10,000 North Shore residents annually.
